Technological advances are rapidly changing the face of finance, and with it the challenges and opportunities confronting financial regulators. Understanding the complex, intertwined relationship between finance, technology, and regulation is no longer optional for those researching and working in these fields – it’s an absolute necessity. Buckley, Arner, and Zetzsche provide a strong foundation for this understanding and, having built it, offer important insights into everything from the rise of fintech, regtech, and bigtech to the rapidly evolving worlds of AI and crypto.

Book review published by the Banking and Finance Law Review

In a LinkedIn post, the Banking and Finance Law Review wrote:

In his review of Fintech: Finance, Technology and Regulation (Cambridge University Press, 2023), Andrew Dahdal examines a landmark text by Ross Buckley, Douglas Arner, and Dirk Zetzsche that captures the rapid evolution of FinTech and its implications for the financial sector.

Structured into four main parts, the book covers digital transformation, the challenges of innovation in finance, building better financial systems, and the opportunities and risks of scale and concentration in digital finance.

Dahdal highlights the book’s practical focus and its discussion of a wide range of issues, including seemingly “ancillary” topics such as technological infrastructure, which fully captures the scope of regulation that ought to cover to ensure financial technology is deployed in a safe and responsible manner.

The book draws on lessons from multiple jurisdictions to provide insights into how FinTech can be harnessed to promote key policy goals, including financial inclusion and sustainability.

Andrew Dahdal is an Assistant Professor in commercial Law at the College of Law, Qatar University.
