The Hong Kong Monetary Authority began its research on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in 2017 to better understand its feasibility, implications, and potential uses at the wholesale level.

 

How can we keep up with technologies as it continues to reshape business and financial applications?

 

This HKU FinTech Day 2022 panel discusses the technical architecture (Blockchain) for CBDCs, security and privacy measures, the gap between private and public information, artificial intelligence’s ability to trace illicit transactions and more!

Professor Siu-Ming Yiu, Associate Director, HKU-SCF FinTech Academy and Associate Head (Teaching and Learning), Department of Computer Science, The University of Hong Kong

Opening Remarks Speaker: Professor Tak-Wah Lam

Professor TW Lam joined HKU after receiving his PhD in Computer Science from University of Washington in 1988. He served as an associate dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2001 to 2006 and is currently the Head of the Computer Science Department and the Executive Director of the HKU-SCF FinTech Academy. His research ranges from theoretical analysis of algorithms to big data analytics for health informatics. He has published over 200 research articles in international conferences and journals, and the most impactful ones come from the engineering work in bioinformatics software. More recently, he has been aspiring to tackle industrial problems with intricate algorithmic techniques and has been awarded a number of ITF grants. In 2014, he together with Professor D Cheung and Dr R Luo has co-founded a startup company to advance the bioinformatics software technologies for analyzing high-throughput DNA sequencing data for clinical applications. Professor Lam loves teaching, especially in inspiring students to learn theoretical subjects. He has received several teaching awards from the Department and the Faculty, as well as a University-level research student supervisor award.

Panel Chair: Professor Siu-Ming Yiu

Professor Siu-Ming YIU is a professor and an Associate Head (T&L) in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong. He is also an Associate Executive Director of the HKU-SCF FinTech Academy. His research interests include cryptography, cyber security, FinTech, and privacy-preserving technologies. He has published 300+ research papers and was selected three times as a highly cited researcher by Clarivate. He has won numerous teaching and research awards in the university. He and his former PhD student also co-founded a start-up company focusing on quantitative trading using AI technologies and the company is now managing a total of US$21M for the clients.

Speaker: Dr. Au, Allen M.H

Dr. Man Ho Allen Au is an associate professor of the Department of Computer Science in the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He received his BEng and MPhil degrees from the Department of Information Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003 and 2005 respectively. He then obtained his PhD from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering of the University of Wollongong in 2009. Before joining HKU, he was an associate professor in the Department of Computing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests include applied cryptography, information security, blockchain technology, and related industrial applications. Dr. Au has published over 170 refereed papers in top journals and conferences, including CRYPTO, ASIACRYPT, IEEE S&P, ACM CCS, ACM SIGMOD, NDSS, IEEE TIFS, TC, TKDE, etc. He is a recipient of the 2009 PET runner-up award for outstanding research in privacy enhancing technologies. Dr. Au’s research has generated significant social and economic impact. In the past 5 years, he has, as the principal investigator, attracted over 25 million HKD in research and high-level consultancy projects. His digital signature technology has been adopted by the Hyperledger Fabric project, the most popular blockchain infrastructure supported by big industry players like IBM, Intel and SAP. His analysis on privacy, and design of new privacy-preserving techniques for confidential transactions, has been discussed and reported by leading privacy-friendly currencies such as Monero. Dr. Au is also an expert member of the China delegation of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 working group 2 - Cryptography and security mechanisms and a committee member of the Hong Kong Blockchain Society R&D division.

Speaker: Dr. Liu, Qi, Assistant Professor

Qi Liu is an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science, the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include natural language processing, machine learning, and FinTech. He has been serving on the program committees for leading machine learning conferences and journals like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, and NAACL.

Speaker: Dr. Qian, Chenxiong, Assistant Professor

Chenxiong is assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science at The University of Hong Kong. He leads the HKUS3 Lab, designing and building systems to automatically detect and prevent attacks in software and systems. Their research interests encompass program analysis, software debloating, dynamic/hybrid testing, and binary code analysis.
